Accelerating CHERI

Where Research, Engineering, and Ecosystem Power Converge

CH + CA + CRC Connections

Strengthening the CHERI Ecosystem Together

The CHERI ecosystem brings together organisations with complementary missions to accelerate the adoption, maturation, and impact of CHERI technology. Three key contributors (the CHERI Alliance, The Capable Hub, and the CHERI Research Centre at the University of Cambridge) work in close partnership to advance secure computing and enable real world deployment of CHERI enabled solutions. This page summarises their distinct roles and how they collaborate to support industry, researchers, and the broader open-source community.

The CHERI Alliance

Coordinating the global CHERI ecosystem

The CHERI Alliance drives and accelerates the global adoption of CHERI by coordinating collaboration, aligning community priorities, and serving as the public voice of the ecosystem. It’s the connective force that keeps the entire community moving forward.

Its role includes:

  • Organising ecosystem-wide collaboration through Working Groups and community events such as CHERI Blossoms and CHERI Tech conferences.
  • Aligning technical recommendations and standards, and managing CHERI certification
  • Providing strategic guidance through participation in The Capable Hub’s technical advisory and steering structures.
  • Supporting marketing and outreach activities that help broaden the impact and visibility of CHERI.
  • Showcasing research breakthroughs, particularly from the CHERI Research Centre, to drive wider industry adoption.

The Capable Hub

Engineering open-source CHERI software

The Capable Hub strengthens the CHERI ecosystem by improving the availability, quality, and upstream alignment of CHERI-enabled open-source software. It provides essential engineering resources and infrastructure, making it easier and faster for organisations to develop CHERI-secured products.

Key contributions include:

  • Standing up an experienced software development team to support ecosystem-wide progress.
  • Actively contributing engineering and expertise within CHERI Alliance Working Groups.
  • Providing development infrastructure—such as continuous integration and hardware-in-the-loop tooling—to support collaborative engineering across the Alliance.
  • Publishing open-source software artifacts that can be used, extended, or productionised by research partners.
  • Consolidate and commercialize software from the CHERI Research Centre and other developers, bringing state of the art innovation to end users

The CHERI Research Centre

Advancing CHERI through world leading research

The CHERI Research Centre (from University of Cambridge) is the origin point of more than fifteen years of CHERI research and plays a foundational role within the CHERI Alliance. Its work encompasses architecture design, prototyping, software enablement, and standards development.

Its contributions include:

  • Leading cutting-edge CHERI research and driving technology standardisation.
  • Collaborating closely with industrial adopters to ensure research outcomes map to real-world needs.
  • Participating in and leading multiple CHERI Alliance Working Groups.
  • Building upon open-source artifacts published by The Capable Hub to push forward new research while enabling a cycle of continuous innovation.

How These Organisations Work Together

Complementary missions, aligned impact

The combination of engineering capacity, ecosystem coordination, and research excellence forms a tightly connected pipeline from scientific innovation to practical deployment.

A virtuous innovation cycle

  • The Capable Hub publishes high-quality, upstream-aligned open-source software.
  • The CHERI Research Centre builds on these artifacts to advance research, and its research outputs feed back into the ecosystem.
  • The CHERI Alliance ensures alignment, strategic prioritisation, and community cohesion across these efforts.

Shared goals

Together, the three organisations:

  • Enable product developers to access reliable, secure, and well-maintained CHERI-enabled components.
  • Accelerate CHERI adoption across industry and academia.
  • Drive secure computing technology from research prototypes to market-ready solutions.
  • Ensure the CHERI ecosystem remains collaborative, innovative, and responsive to industry and community needs.

A Unified Vision for Secure Computing

Through this collaboration, the Capable Hub, the CHERI Alliance, and the CHERI Research Centre are jointly building a cohesive and forward-looking path for the future of cybersecurity. Their work ensures that CHERI open-source software is robust, well-maintained, and aligned with both research advancements and industry requirements—ultimately helping accelerate the global transition toward safer, more secure computing.
