Digital Catapult is a deep tech innovation organisation.
We help businesses grow by applying deep tech. We show what is possible, positive and productive with advanced technology. We work with businesses and early adopters to explore, develop, and apply advanced technologies, bridging the gap between innovation and real-world impact.
From 2022 until March 2025, Digital Catapult managed and delivered the DSbD Technology Access Programme (TAP), funded by UKRI and in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, ARM and lowRISC.
The programme accelerated awareness and advancement of the CHERI (Capability Hardware Enhanced RISC Instructions) framework, convening businesses across multiple sectors to experiment with the Morello and Sonata boards. In addition to providing participants with access to hardware, Digital Catapult also provided technical support and project guidance.
Across the delivery of 6 cohorts, made up of 51 different companies from across the UK, TAP helped validate the security benefits of CHERI, demonstrating its ability to detect and prevent memory vulnerabilities, as well as the additional trust and performance available from the adoption of compartmentalisation models. TAP demonstrated how CHERI can be used for enhancing application security and reducing attack surfaces in their own and/or third-party code. Cohort companies validated that CHERI would have identified known issues much more quickly and helped mitigate vulnerabilities before product deployment, and were also able to identify clear business opportunities for using CHERI in new and existing products.
In addition, Digital Catapult built a Remote Lab, allowing companies to access a virtual platform hosted on Morello for CI/CD with CheriBSD. More information on this can be found here: https://github.com/dc-dsbd
