CHERI Activities

The Systems Security Group (SSG), led by Prof Siraj Shaikh, at Swansea has played a leading role in adoption and integration of CHERI in the automotive industry. As part of the AutoCHERI initiative, the group has led on the threat analysis and risk assessment for integrating CHERI as part of modern automotive systems, and demonstrated the unique role memory safety and compartmentalisation features play in the automotive cybersecurity value chain. Moreover, the group has also led on the economic case for secure hardware technologies, ensuring a clear business case is established for adoption and integration of technologies like CHERI. This effort has informed the market case for the UK’s National Semiconductor Strategy 2023. More recent work, in collaboration with Strategize Inc, a business simulation tool has also been developed to help businesses develop a financial model for the adoption of CHERI, with a view to offsetting costs around cybersecurity risks, liabilities and potential losses, and building over advantage to be had in minimising disruptions and software updates.
